The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation envisions a world at peace, free of the threat of war and free of weapons of mass destruction. We initiate and support worldwide efforts to abolish nuclear weapons, to strengthen international law and institutions, and to inspire and empower a new generation of peace leaders. Founded in 1982, the Foundation is comprised of individuals and organizations worldwide who realize the imperative for peace in the Nuclear Age.
We are a non-profit, non-partisan international education and advocacy organization. We have consultative status to the United Nations Economic and Social Council and are recognized by the UN as a Peace Messenger Organization.
Our work is endorsed by tens of thousands of supporters around the world, including the Dalai Lama, who said, “The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation has been doing excellent work by encouraging a climate of peace and harmony in the world. It has been a consistent voice in ending the nuclear weapons threat to humanity and all life.”
The Foundation has been a leader in the movement for the global abolition of nuclear weapons since 1982. By establishing a Chapter in your area, you will have access to Foundation materials, such as DVDs, fact sheets and booklets. Our knowledgeable staff will help you with setting up effective events and campaigns in your local area. The Foundation’s regular email updates will keep you informed on the most pressing nuclear disarmament issues. We will supply Chapters with ideas for events and actions in their area that are well-timed and meaningful.
Chapters can increase the visibility of their group and the issue in the local media through their relationship with the Foundation. A strong connection with an international organization will boost your group’s credibility and demonstrate that you are part of a much larger movement. The Foundation has an impressive Advisory Council, including Nobel Peace Laureates the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Mairead Corrigan Maguire. We also have support from many academic associates, to whom we can turn for advice on various issues.
The Foundation has published a monthly newsletter, The Sunflower, for over 10 years, which is sent to our 30,000+ members. NAPF Chapter events and information can be included in the newsletter. We also regularly produce op-eds that can be submitted to your local newspapers, and have developed a successful formula for press releases and letters to the editor.
Our two main websites, wagingpeace.org and nuclearfiles.org, together have over 750,000 unique visitors each year. Nuclear Files is an educational website that gives a detailed look at the history of the Nuclear Age. Waging Peace is an advocacy and education site that details all of the Foundation’s campaigns and contains an extensive archive of articles on nuclear issues. Your Chapter will have a dedicated page on our Waging Peace site.
Every group is different – this section is meant to give you a general idea of what a NAPF Chapter will look like. For specific questions, see the Contact Us section at the end of this document.
A Chapter will have a defined area, such as a neighborhood (the West Side), city (San Francisco), school/university (University of San Francisco), or region (the Bay Area).
Each chapter will have a designated liaison. The liaison will report on all special events held by the Chapter and will provide the NAPF Director of Programs with a brief bimonthly update of the Chapter’s activities. Other Chapter members are, of course, free to communicate with us at any time as well.
Chapters are not required to participate in all NAPF campaigns and programs, but are strongly encouraged to do so. We will regularly send you updates on our national and international campaigns separately from the Sunflower e-newsletter and our Action Alerts.
The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit, non-partisan organization. As such, we do not endorse political candidates, political parties or active ballot measures. This is essential not only to maintain our tax-exempt status with the IRS, but also to include as many people as possible in our work. We do not view our issue as Barack Obama vs. John McCain, or Democrat vs. Republican. Nuclear weapons destroy indiscriminately, regardless of age, gender or political persuasion. This is an issue that affects us all equally as humans, therefore we seek the participation of all.
This restriction can get a little tricky around election time. It is a restriction that we take very seriously, so the general rule to follow is to never speak in favor or against a candidate while under the NAPF banner. If you have questions, do not hesitate to contact us.
The Foundation regularly produces materials that will be of use to you in your local campaigning. We are always open to your suggestions for materials that will help you to be more effective.
Some of our current offerings include:
The DVDUS Leadership for a Nuclear Weapons-Free World, which includes an 8-minute feature video of the same name in both English and Spanish. The DVD also includes our earlier video “Nuclear Weapons and the Human Future” and some bonus features.
A petition to President Obama available to sign online and as a paper version. We have joined in this effort with dozens of organizations around the world.
Countless essays and opinion articles in the Archives section of wagingpeace.org.
Fact sheets and reports on the current status of nuclear arsenals around the world.
